Funeral services for Vernon K. Gates, 68, 70 Ober Street, Massena, will be held Friday at 10 a..m. at Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.

Mr. Gates died at 5:07 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 1968 at Massena Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since October 18, 1987.

Surviving are his wife Julia; a son Robert Gates of Massena; four sisters, Florence Black of CT, Pauline Antonuccio if Everett, MA, Millie Hammond of Orange, CA and Grace Thompson of Melboro, MA; a brother, Baxter Gates of Chicago, IL; several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Cambridge, MA on February 13, 1919, son of Stanley and Lillian Reid Gates. He had attended schools in Cambridge, MA. He had served in the United States Army during World War II, from November 4, 1942 until November 10, 1947. He also served at the Arsenal at Watertown, MA.

On February 13, 1944 he was married to Julia Pohola in Trenton, NJ. He was employed as a driver for St. Johnsberry Trucking in Cambridge, MA, retiring in 1979, when the couple moved to Massena.

Mr. Gates was a member of the American Legion Post 79 in Massena and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1110 of Massena.
