Blended. Honored. Loved---these three words is a partial description of the extraordinary life that our mother, Flora Lee Samber. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, cousin, grandmother---these words list the variety of roles in which she let her light shine as she encouraged and loved all those she came in contact with.

Flora was born on November 16, 1926 in Spartanburg, SC to David and Stella Rice. She was the third of seven children and a wonderful sister to Orlando, Lucille, Hazel, John, Lois and Mildred. The family made Hackensack their home when she was just three years old. She was raised in a Christian home and upon moving to Hackensack they quickly made Mt Olive Baptist Church their church home where she was a faithful member for over than 73 years.

Flora Rice became Flora Samber in 1949, when she married the love of her life, Theron Samber, who died March 25, 2001. They became parents of two wonderful daughters, Renee and Sheron, who were raised in a beautiful Christian home where Bible readings, prayers, Sunday school and church attendance were a very important part of their daily lives. Flora was the wife and mother described in Proverbs 23--a prayer warrior for her family, and was seen on her knees every night praying for the needs and concerns of her family.

She received her education in the Hackensack Public Schools graduating from Hackensack High School in 1944. She furthered her education and graduated from Bess Myerson Nursing School in 1946 receiving her License of Practical Nursing. She retired from Hackensack University Medical Center in 1991, where she worked for 34 years in the Emergency Room.

Flora belonged to the Martin Luther King Center in Hackensack, NJ and was a member of American Legion Post 58 and was secretary of the Post Stroke group that met every Thursday in Rochelle Park, NJ.
