M. O. gave his age as 36 when he enlisted in the confederate Army (CSA 5th Texas Calvery) on 09 November 1863. He was still in the Army in 1864, serving in the Coleman and Brown Counties under the command of Captain Isaac Mullin. Family tradition indicated he and his brother Lemuel Carroll Barton, had gone to Mexico to help put down an Indian uprising. In the ensuing battle M. O. was killed. He was wrapped in swaddling cloth and brought back to Home Creek for burial.

Manelius was the seventh son of Benjamin Franklin (J. Benjamin) BARTON, Jr. and Zilpha BAKER BARTON.
