Mary Juliet Ragsdale, daughter of David and Peggy Ragsdale, was born in Pope County, near Brownfield, Illinois, February 16, 1862, and died at the home of her son, Chas. Grisham at Rock on March 21, 1947, aged 85 years, 1 month and 5 days. She resided all her life in the neighborhood where she was born.
She was married to Andrew J. Grisham in 1885 and lived a faithful companion with him 42 years and four months. To this union were born three children: Delcia Parmley and Mary Harper who are deceased and a son, Charles Grisham with whom she lived during her declining years and who, with his wife, Arlene, cared for her faithfully and devotedly during her last illness. She is survived also by a foster son, Francis Colegrove and a step-daughter, Martha Moore; seven grandchildren: Halene Chiles, Virginia Cruse, Hazel English, Mary Zettler, Russell Harper, and John Parmley; six great-grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren, great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren. She was a foster mother to numerous other children whom she took into her home and to whom she gave a mothers care.
She was converted at the age of 20, in 1882, and later in life joined the Primitive Baptist church at Old Grandpierre and remained a member until her death.
She was telephone operator at Rock for 32 years, becoming known as "Aunt Julia." She lived a successful life, a life of service for others and won the gratitude of many whom in some way or other she helped bear life's burdens.
She leaves besides her children hosts of friends who can sincerely say they have lost a tried and true friend. It can be said of "Aunt Julia" that she followed to the best of her ability the golden rule: "As ye would that men should do unto you, do ye unto them..." She has fought a good fight, has kept the faith and has now gone on to her reward.
Funeral services were conducted by Elder C. M. Weaver, of Johnston City, Illinois, Sunday morning at 10:30 o' clock from the Mt. Zion Baptist church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were: Ado Lauderdale, L. L. Hamilton and Elmer Burns, World War 1 Vets and Eugene Lauderdale, Millard Farmer and Loy Cletcher, World War 11 Veterans.
