Robert Maurice Mc Grew was born in 1893, in Shelburn, Indiana, the youngest child of Nannie (Curry) and Spencer Mc Grew. His mother passed away when he was six years old and he was orphaned by the age of 12. Family members continued to raise Robert to adulthood. Robert passed away in Silver City, New Mexico, on March 16, 1926.

Robert served the State of Kansas as a Chief Yeoman in the US Navy Rerserve Forces. He then attended College in Las Cruces, NM.

Robert and Maud Villa Ward were married in 1923 in Silver City, NM. Their only child, a son, Robert Maurice Mc Grew, Jr. was born in 1924.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Elah.

He was survived by his wife, Maud; his son, Robert; and his brother, Alvey.

Per the 1920 Census, he was attending the New Mexico College of Agriculture in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. This school was originally known as Las Cruces College and later renamed New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In 1960, the constitution of New Mexico formally recognized the institution as New Mexico State University.
