She met John Thomas Tate at Mt Olive School in East Point, GA, where they became childhood sweethearts and later married on 27 Nov 1904. She and John had 8 children, 6 of whom lived to adulthood. Vassie and John were lifelong residents of College Park, Fulton, GA.
She was a wonderful cook, fixing all their meals on a wood stove, even after electricity was added to their home. She suffered "white swelling" or TB of the bone as a young woman, which left her with a crippled arm for the rest of her life. She never complained and did not let it slow her down raising their children, working in the home, or helping John with the garden and animals on the small farm they owned.
She was a charter member of Mt Olive Baptist Church and before they had transportation, she and John would walk with the children to and from the church. Faith was always a big part of her life. She loved her Lord and her church and her family very much.
Vassie enjoyed knitting and loved flowers, especially roses, jonquils, gardenias and bluebells. She would often have a bouquet of flowers in the house.
She was known as "Mama Tate" to her 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and was loved by all.
She died at the home of her daughter, Daisy Malline (Tate) Babb, who lived next door to the Tate home place, where she had lived the last 7 years of her life after the passing of John. She was 92 and died from congestive heart failure and is stilled missed today.
