Joseph D. Briggs, 83, formerly of Coffeyville died Friday, December 5, 2008 at RHD Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

He was the son of Roger Lewis and Essie (Reed) Briggs born on January 1, 1925 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He attended Pittsburg Kansas High School; and later graduated from Coffeyville Community College.

He enlisted in the US Navy on July 10, 1943. During his tour of duty he was in the South Pacific during WWII, served on many ships including the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was stationed in Rhode Island, Oakland, CA, Jacksonville, FL and Nicosia, Cyprus. He retired on August 1, 1967 as Ships Serviceman Chief.

On May 31st, 1951 he married Joyce Colley at Pleasant Valley Baptist Mission in Noxie (Wann), Oklahoma. After his retirement from the Navy they made Coffeyville their home where he worked for John Deere Company and Sherwin-Williams Company.

He loved to read, collect books, and watch classic western movies. One of his favorite actors/singer was Gene Autry.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, his parents, and his brother Max Briggs.

He is survived by his sons; Joseph D. (Linda) Briggs Jr. of Coffeyville, Thomas D. (Karen) Briggs of Dallas, Texas, six grandchildren; Amanda (Steven) Gillham of St. Peters, MO, Jessica Briggs, Luke Briggs of Coffeyville, Karlie, Emily, and Allison Briggs of Dallas, TX; one great grandchild; Madison Gillham.
