Born April 13, 1880, in Chester, Sanpete County, Dr. Cowles later moved with his family to the Harrisville area of Weber County. He attended Weber Academy and
taught the first normal courses offered there. Cowles first joined the University of Utah in 1914 as an assistant professor in secondary education. He became a dean in 1931
