A son of George Whitfield Gainous and Hespian Adcocks Gainous. He was age 18 in the 1850 Census of Dooly County, Georgia, showing he was born in 1832. He married Miss Caroline Cone, December 23, 1853 in Dooly County, Georgia. 1860 Census we find George and Caroline living in Decatur Co., GA. along with their children Abel, James Luwell and King B.

George Whitfield Gainous was killed in action, at the Second Manassas, August 30, 1862. The Second Battle of Bull Run or Second Manassas was fought August 28–30, 1862,[1] as part of the American Civil War. It was the culmination of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, against Union Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia, and a battle of much larger scale and numbers than the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) fought in 1861 on the same ground.
