My father, Bennie Likens, was born in Horsebranch, Kentucky in January of 1943. He was the son of Willis Lee and Mildred Likens, both deceased. They, too, were from Horsebranch, and they came to Whiting, Indiana, like many other families from that area, to find work at what was then Standard Oil. It is now BP, and still located in Whiting.
It was during high school that Bennie met Patsy Kolina. Although he attended Whiting High School and she Bishop Noll Institute in nearby Hammond, they fell in love and married soon after college. He got a Pharmacy degree from Purdue-Lafayette in southern Indiana and she got her MALS in History from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
