According to the 1900 DC Census, Emily E. FitzGerald was born in Indiana in October 1882.

Emily married George Linville Smith and they had three children: Thomas, Rosanna & Belle.

The Evening Capital reports that Mrs. Linville Smith, daughter-in-law of the Mayor of Arundel, has opened Concord Cottage for a short stay at Arundel, and with Mr. Smith and her small son, Wilson, will remain for the closing days of the season.

After George's death in 1918, Emily and the children moved in with her parents, Wm. and Emma FitzGerald, who were living at 2310 Tracy Place N.W., Washington, D.C.

Emily and her children resided in Paris, France, at the time of death of her mother-in-law, Caroline Smith in December 1925.

According to the New York Times, Emily Smith died suddenly in Geneva, Switzerland on October 11, 1926 of lung congestion that followed an attack of bronchitis. She had resided there for two years to educate her children. Several weeks before, her son Thomas Wilson, entered Oxford, while her daughters, Rosanna and Belle, remained at school in Geneva. Although Emily's illness had not been considered serious by her physicians, Thomas was sent for a few days before and was present at her side when she died. The funeral was held in the American Church on October 12th and the body cremated later in the day.

Emily F. Smith was buried May 23, 1927 in the Fitzgerald gravesite at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
