He married Mary Ann Snodgrass 10 December 1818 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. (Virginia, Marriages, 1740-1850 - without citation - says the marriage took place in Washington county, Virginia. It should be noted that at the time a goodly portion of these two counties were opposite each other on respective sides of the Tennessee-Virginia state line.)

Jacob Lyon was son of Humberson and Sarah Lyon. He married Mary "Polly" Snodgrass, daughter of Major James Snodgrass. Jacob's brother Stephen married Mary's sister Margaret Snodgrass. Mary's father Major James Snodgrass and her uncle William Snodgrass both fought in the Battle of King's Mountain (7 October 1780). Lt. Humberson Lyon, Jr., Jacob's brother, was killed in that battle.
