Patrick was a Union soldier in the Civil War who was a part of General Sherman's famous "March To The Sea" campaign from Atlanta to Savannah. As the Union Army made its way through the Georgia countryside, Patrick fell in love with the Ohoopee river area saying it reminded him of Ireland. After the war, Patrick went back with his two sons to live there, leaving his wife and daughters up north. In a unique twist of fate, his son, Patrick Jr., married two daughters (the first died young) of a Confederate soldier, James F. Benton, also from the Ohoopee area.
