NELLIE BURROWS SEWARD - 91

Hartly - Nellie Burrows Seward, 91 of Hartly, passed on Tuesday, December 10th at the Delaware Home and Hospital in Smyrna. She was born August 26, 1917 near Leipsic, Delaware, the daughter of the late Benjamin D. and Elizabeth Collins Burrows.

Nellie worked very hard as a farmer's daughter, a farmer's wife, a mother and a grandmother. She drove a school bus to Hartly School for a few years and worked at International Playtex for a short period of time. She was a devoted caregiver for all her grandchildren as well as other children in the immediate area for many years. She had many interests, including gardening, raising muscovy ducks, canning, making homemade butter, baking pies, and still found time being creative with her quilting, embroidery and painting ceramics. Many family members and friends were recipients of her beautiful hand quilted quilts for graduations and weddings over the years.

She was a member of The Hartly Methodist Church, The Modern Maturity Center, The Bethesda Grange 64, and a life member of the Hartly Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. As a child, she attended the historical Cowgills Corner School which still stands on Route 9 at Cowgills Corner, east of Dover.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George W. Seward, who died in January 1977, six sisters: Elizabeth Hurd, Anna Biddle, Mildred Faulkner, Ethel Krupka, Lulu Cummins, May Fithion; four brothers: Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin and George Burrows.

She is survived by four daughters: Margaret S. Jewell and her husband, Eddie, of Hartly; Catherine (Kitty) Nickerson and her husband, Dick, of Hartly; Ermel (Bobbi) Knotts and her husband, William, of Dover; and Edna Connor of Clayton; two sisters, Catherine Miller of Smyrna and Hilda Krupka of Hartly; eight grandchildren: William Nickerson, Jr., Edward C. Jewell, Brenda J. Solloway, Beau Knotts, Edward Knotts, Joe Nickerson, Dwayne Nickerson and Joanne Nickerson, and eleven great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
