From the Salinas Californian, 22 May 2008:

"Vahé Aslanian 90, of Salinas, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008, peacefully at home after a very brief illness. His wife, Charlotte Deane, and children were at his side at the time of his passing. Vahé was born to immigrant parents March 13, 1918, in Dorchester, Mass.

"Growing up in the Boston area, he was introduced to music at an early age, studying piano and singing in the Trinity Church Choir. Music was to become his life long passion. He received his Bachelor's degree from Boston University.

"Upon graduation he entered the United States Army and served his country with distinction from 1941 to 1945. During the time he was stationed near Salem, Oregon, he met his wife, Charlotte Deane Ellingsworth, who was attending Willamette University. They were married just prior to his deployment to the Pacific Front. He was attached to the 25th Infantry Division and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was a decorated combat veteran and was discharged at the rank of Captain. Upon re-entering civilian life, Vahé accepted a position teaching music at a junior high school in San Bernardino while attending Claremont Graduate School. After receiving the degree of Master of Arts he accepted a position at Hartnell Community College in Salinas. While at Hartnell he attended Stanford University where he received the degree of doctor of musical arts. After a thirty year career as Professor of Music, Director of Choral Organizations and Founder Director of the Hartnell College Conservatory of Music he retired and established the choral group Camerata Singers. He held this position from 1980 to 1999. This group performed a broad array of music which continues today under the leadership of Vahé's dear friend and colleague, John Koza."
