JOHN BOTTOM

John Bottom was born near Prickwillow, England, May 12, 1835. He received his early training and education in his native land, and stirred with an ambition to make a place for himself in America, he emigrated to the United States in 1856, locating at Diamond Lake, Ill. Here he met and married Sarah Clements, a union blessed with seven children and the privilege of traveling together life's pathway in unbroken wedlock for a period of over sixty years.
Following a trip to Kansas in 1858, when he first preempted his land, he with his wife returned in 1861 and located at Bucks Grove. Then began the struggle along with the other pioneers of that early day to overcome the many obstacles which confronted them, to make for themselves a home and lay a foundation for that type of livng which is today the very strength of our commonwealth. Our present generation, sharing in every kind of privilege if not luxury can never know the privations and sacrifices that these sturdy pioneers had to endure to make possible the superior advantages which have become our rich heritage. From this we may well learn anew lessons of simplicity, honor, faithfulness and selfsacrificing devotion, those fine enduring qualities that give meaning to life. Mr. Bottom was an active leader in all the things that made for advancement and better community life. A student of horticulture, he made a great contribution to the development of that phase of our farm life in the years past. At the call of his country during the Rebellion he was one of those Kansans who helped to repel Price's invasion and save Kansas as a free state. His interest in the moral and religious life is best expressed in that he became a charter member of the Bucks Grove Church in which he has held an official relation during many of the years since. He loved his church and the things the church stood for. His body used to hard toil through the years finally grew tired and yielded to the infirmities of advanced age and entered into its rest, Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 1924, at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and seven days.
Mr. Bottom leaves besides his faithful wife and companion of these many years, three sons; Samuel, Clements, and Thomas, and two daughters; Martha Ann Manuel, and Rhoda McKinsey. Two sons, Francis and James, preceded him in death. He also leaves 30 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren, and many neighbors and friends to cherish his memory. Funeral services were held the afternoon of August 20th in Bucks Grove Church. Rev. Wm. Mayfield of Soldier, preached the sermon and Rev. Kingsbury assisted. The body was laid to rest in the Bucks Grove cemetery.
