Mr. Powell served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He retired after 29 years of service with the Norfolk Southern Railway and was a member and deacon at Green Ridge Baptist Church. Ray was an avid golfer and outdoorsman.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Trilby W. Powell; children, Gary Powell and wife, Sharon, of El Salvador, Central America, Tim Powell and wife, Vicky, of Goodview, and Lynne Hill and husband, Jeff, of Buchanan; 14 grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; sisters, Lois Huddleston, of Roanoke, and Linda Guttmann and husband, Jack, of Covington, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to My Fathers House International, P.O. Box 20673, Roanoke, Va. or to Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. J. Michael Palmer, the Rev. Greg Moser, and Gary Powell. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home.
