Mr. Hays was a linotype operator with the Shreveport Times in the 1930s. On Sept. 13, 1936, he and several other adults and about 9 children were in a tiny boat on Cross lake in Shreveport when it capsized, killing one of the adults and three children, including his daughter, Carol, with whom he is buried.
