JOHN G. DEWEIN, 83, WAR VET, DIES
SURVIVOR OF CIVIL WAR PASSES AWAY
FOLLOWING SHORT ILLNESS
John George Dewein, 83, Civil war veteran and for more than forty years an employee of the street department of the city, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry H. Schnicker, 1305 South Tenth street, Wednesday evening at 7 0'clock, following an illness of about four days.
Mr. Dewein was born in Burlington, February, 1842, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Dewein, former residents of Germany. His entire life except for Civil war service, was spent in this city and on September 26, 1851 (Likely an error--1861?), enlisted in the service of the federal armies but was mustered out thirty days later. Later, he re-enlisted and served in the army, taking part in considerable active fighting, until February 15, 1864, at which time he was honorably discharged.
After the war he was married, December 8, 1865, to Miss Julia Jacobs, of Burlington. Mrs. Dewein died some years ago but to this union three children were born, all of whom survive. The are Frank Dewein, of Lovell, Wyo., Elmer Dewein of Galesburg, Ill., and Mrs. Henry H. Schnicker of Burlington, with whom Mr. Dewein had been making his home. (Louise E. (Dewein) Schnicker)
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Hermann of Burlington and Mrs. Rickey Benitz* (*Bonitz) of New Jersey, and a brother, L. H. Dewein (Louis H. Dewein) of Burlington.
The remains were taken to the Burnett-Wallen mortuary and funeral services will consist of a private service from the daughter's home, and a service from the Burnett-Wallen mortuary, the various times to be announced later.
