ELLIS HART

At 1.20 o'clock Saturday afternoon Mr. Ellis Hart, an aged and respected citizen of Duncansville, died at his home of diseases incident to advanced years.

Mr. Hart was born on September 3, 1820, at Eldorado, and was the son of Ezra and Sara (Westover) Hart, deceased. He was twice married. His first wife, Hettie Kemberling, died in June, 1873, leaving these children: Alex L., of Omaha, Neb., Ezra B., of Lakeville, California; S. K., of Altoona, and Ellis W., of Youngwood, PA.

Mr. Hart's second wife was Mrs. Mary (Haun)Myers, widow of Daniel Myers. She survives as do also these stepchildren: Alfred B., Abraham L. and Daniel G., of Altoona; Mrs. M. F. Beamer, Mrs. Jennie Richardson and Mrs. I. C. Hess, of Duncansville.

He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Brubaker, of Carson Valley; Mrs. Margaret Stoner, and Mrs. Isaac Maines of Altoona, and two brothers, Oliver Hart, of Kansas, and Peter S. Hart, of this city.

In his early life he united with the First Baptist church, of Hollidaysburg, was always a consistent member and was a regular attendee until his health failed. At the time of his death he held the distinction of being the oldest member of the Hollidaysburg Baptist church.

He was enrolled at Camp Crossman, September 5, 1861 as a private in company I, Eighty-fourth regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Sometime afterward he was promoted to sergeant. On June 9,1862, he was wounded in the left leg by a shell at Port Republic. The same day he was taken prisoner and walked ninety miles without having his wound dressed. He escaped and was sent to a Philadelphia hospital. On September 17, 1862, he was honorably discharged from the service of his country, being unfit for further field duty. He faced the enemy in battles of Hancock, Bath, Greenbriar, Cedar Springs, Winchester, Front Royal, and Port Republic. He was also a member of William G. Murray post No. 39, Grand Army of the Republic.

He was elected to several offices by the people of his district, in his active days, and was enthusiastic in any work for the welfare of Duncansville and its people. He was a man of a most happy temperament, his company being sought by both young and old.
