Samuel Palmer Gaillard, Mobile, was born at Perdue Hill, Monroe county, Alabama, March 26, 1856; is the son of Dr. Samuel S. and Lucy Susan (Fry) Gaillard, and the grandson of Thomas and Marianne (Palmer) Gaillard, and of George W. and Lucy (Wilkinson) Frye. He is the fifth in descent from Pierre Gaillard, a Huguenot, who migrated to South Carolina late in the 17th century, and settled on the Santee River; Dr. Thomas Gaillard graduated with honors from the South Carolina College, was the author of many literary and historical works, and in 1832 removed to Claiborne, and later to Mobile. On the maternal side he is descended from Judge Simon Frye, of the well known family of that name in Maine. His father, Dr. Samuel S. Gaillard was a captain in the 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment, (C. S. A.), Confederate States Army. Mr. Gaillard was educated at Monroe Academy, near Claiborne; studied law under Peter and Thomas A. Hamilton, and was admitted to the bar; and has since practiced his profession in Mobile. He is a Democrat; a ruling elder in the Jackson Street Presbyterian Church of Mobile, has served for a number of years as President of the Mobile Young Men's Christian Association; and is a Mason. The wife of Mr. Gaillard is Loule Madison, daughter of Louis M. and Mary Frances (Harris) Wilson, and the granddaughter of Lorenzo M. Wilson, long prominent in the railroad and banking circles of Mobile. The second wife of Mr. Lorenzo M. Wilson was the noted author, Miss August Evans.
