Jesse Edward Gudmundson, 36, former Star Valley resident, of 8 Resolute Rd., Newport, R.I. died May 19, 1977 at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk,, Va. of a heart attack.
Funeral services were held May 24 at 1 p.m. in the Afton Second-Third Ward Church, with Bp. Larry A. Call of the Second Ward officiating. Interment was in the Afton Cemetery with military honors by the United States Naval Honor Guard of Idaho Falls, Idaho,
He was born May 3, 1941 in Santa Monica, Calif. His mother, Veneda Regina Eggleston, died four days later, leaving behind Jesse, his father, Guy Leland Gudmundson, and two brothers Gerald and Grant. Because of various problems, Jesse remained in the hospital for three weeks and then went home with his aunt, Jensina Constant (Connie) England. She and her husband, William H. England, cared for, loved and taught Jesse as their own child, along with William Blaine, Elaine and Jean.
The family moved to Grover, Wyo. in 1946, and here Jesse attended elementary school. They moved to Afton in 1955, where he attended junior and senior high school and graduated as valedictorian of his class.
In summers he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. In 1959 he entered the University of Wyoming on a four-year honor scholarship and there completed three years. He planned to teach science, but in the fall of his senior year he contracted tularemia, returned home ill, and changed his plans.
Jesse enlisted in the United States Navy Feb 13, 1963 and reported to the U.S. Naval Training Center at San Diego, Calif. He attended an electronics technician school at Treasure Island, Calif., and rapidly advanced thru the ranks.
He married Joe Ann Hincks March 28, 1964 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He was assigned sea duty at the Naval Communications Station at Adak, Alaska from June 1967 until July 1970. In August he went to the naval Training Center in San Diego for seven weeks of instructor training, and then returned to the Naval School Command at Treasure Island where he was an instructor in a radar school for four years and became a Chief Petty Officer.
In October 1974,, Jesse's next assignment was sea duty aboard the destroyer, the USS Edson. On Dec. 5 the ship left for a seven-month tour of Pacific with stops at ports in Hawaii, Guam, Midway, Japan, the Philippines and Hong Kong.
Jesse had exciting experiences when the Edson caught fire off Hawaii, when the destroyer helped evacuate refugees from South Vietnam, when they were on their way to help rescue the Mayaguez and its crew from the Cambodians and when they chased a Russian fishing trawler. In January of 1976 the Edson went to Long Beach for an extended overhaul period, and in March 1977 the destroyer and its crew left Long Beach for the trip around to Newport R.I. On May 9 the destroyer left Norfolk Va. for a two-week normal upkeep period, with plans to go on to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for a refresher training period. However, on May 13, while with his friends, Jesse was hospitalized with a heart attack and he died May 19.
Though in his life he achieved many scholastic and military recognitions, Jesse considered his greatest honors to be those of being a good husband, father and Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife Joe Ann and one 10 1/2 months-old son; William Cody Gudmundson, Newport, R.I.; his foster-parents, William H. and Mildred Bee England, Idaho Falls, Idaho; two brothers, B Grant Gudmundson, Logan, Utah and Gerald Gudmundson, Salt Lake City; a half-sister Mrs Clarence (Jan) Dickson, Reseda, Calif.; his foster family, William Blaine England, Sparks, Nev.; Mrs William C.
