The son of Jacob & Mary Ann (Mechlin) Eichelberger, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Heidelberg Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. He never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. E, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, but died from the effects of dysentery in a hospital at what was then called City Point, Virginia.
