Vernon Bounds Ewing, age 83, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away November 10, 2003, at 8:10 p.m. in Memphis, MO.
He was born April 19, 1920, in Scotland County, Missouri, the second son of Nick Bland and Bessie Vernon (Cox) Ewing.
Vernon was reared southeast of Gorin, Missouri, attended elementary school at Price School, and graduated from Gorin High School in 1937. As a teenager, Vernon made a profession of faith at the Gorin Baptist Church, later transferring his membership to the Memphis Baptist Church.
In adulthood, he lived north of Rutledge and formed a business partnership with his brother, Clark, which resulted in a successful farming operation, as well as Ewing Brothers Land Improvement Contractors. In 1974, he and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Memphis. The Ewing Brothers partnership was dissolved upon the passing of Clark; however, Vernon remained active in the farming operation until his death.
On March 7, 1952, Vernon was united in marriage to Emalie Fletcher, the daughter of Walter and Winnie Rowena (Carman) Fletcher. Two sons were born to this union: Warren Rex, on March 4, 1953; and Samuel Scott, on May 19, 1960.
On December 31, 1971, in Memphis, Missouri, Vernon was united in marriage to Evelyn June (Cook) Lancaster, widow of W. Dale Lancaster, and daughter of Leo A. and Bessie Jewel (Ketchum) Cook.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, on July 18, 1996; his father on January 5, 1968; his mother on September 16, 1970; his older brother, Rowe Bland Ewing on January 20, 1981; and his younger brother, Clark Baldwin Ewing on December 17, 1990.
He is survived by his sons: Warren Rex Ewing and his wife, Vickie Jean (Johnston) Ewing of Collinsville, Oklahoma; Samuel Scott Ewing and his wife, Goldine Rose (Wakefield) Ewing of Phoenix, Arizona; a stepson, Dale Lynn Lancaster and his wife, Connie S. (Bourn) Lancaster of Gladstone, Missouri; his grandchildren, Andrew Nicholas Ewing of Collinsville, Oklahoma, and his special friend, Ashley Russell; Jessica Michelle (Ewing) Nithianandan and her husband, Dheenoth of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kendra Rose Ewing and Erika Scott Ewing of Phoenix, Arizona; and step grandchildren, Brandon Chase Lancaster, Peggy Lynn Lancaster, Ashley Lynnette Lancaster, and Alessa LeAnn Lancaster. Other survivors include his sisters-in-law, Helen Marie (Bailey) Ewing (Mrs. Rowe B.) of Lancaster, Texas; Katherine Madeline (Monroe) Ewing (Mrs. Clark B.) of Memphis, Missouri; one cousin, Geraldine Skirvin of LaBelle, Missouri; one nephew, Rowe Burton Ewing and his wife, Mona Lee (Garrahan) Ewing of Red Oak, Texas, as well as two nieces: Katherine Elaine (Ewing) Forrester and her husband, Sterling Dean of Memphis, Missouri, and Janet Lee (Ewing) Deaton and her husband, Donald Joe of Huntsville, Alabama.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 15, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis, Missouri, with the Reverend Ernest Deatrick and Pastor Mike Wilson officiating. Special music was provided by Ann Luther, organist, and vocalists, Elaine Forrester, Angela Westhoff, and Alisa Kigar. Serving as pallbearers were Jamie Triplett, Chad Triplett, Curt Triplett, John Wheeler, Don Dice, and Todd Thorne. Honorary bearers were Everett Keith, Joe Neese, and Bill Purvis. Interment was in the Ewing family section of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Gorin, Missouri.
