George is survived by his wife Helen (Kennedy). Along with his wife he is survived by his seven children: Kathy Irvine, Richard Benning (Peggy), Tom Benning (Sheryl), Ray Benning (Valerie), Mike Benning, Mary Noland (Jim) and Jenny Clendenin (J.T.); his brother Tom Benning (Donna); and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents Henry and Katherine (Kortokrax) Benning and eight siblings: Jerome, Raymond, Anthony, Richard, Dorothy, Ruth, Adeline and Mary Benning.

George was born on May 26, 1924, in Glandorf, Ohio. He attended Central Catholic
High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After high school he served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Singing with the Notre Dame Glee Club was one of the highlights of his college experience. He later received his masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of California-Berkley. George worked for Farnsworth in Fort Wayne, Indiana and General Motors AC Sparkplug in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. He ultimately accepted a job with Collins Radio Company, later known as Rockwell Collins International, rising to the position of Vice President of Advanced Technology & Engineering. He remained in the position until he retired in 1990.

Most importantly, George had a tremendous love of life. He cheered for Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs, golfed with friends, and enjoyed a competitive game of bridge with his family. George was a very active member of his church St. Pius X where he served on numerous committees. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. George was a passionate supporter of education and served on many advisory boards. He also loved to learn. He consistently challenged himself, devouring books and magazines and a diverse array of subjects including religion, politics, avionics and astronomy.

Of all George's activities, he cherished spending time with his family the most. Despite his professional accomplishments his family came first. George will be remembered most, however, for his sharp wit, sense of humor, positive attitude, loyalty and desire for the happiness of his family and friends. He remained strong and upbeat until his last day. Finally, he wanted his wife, children and grandchildren to all know he loved them dearly. His love of God, family and friends was apparent to anyone who may have known him. All will miss his exemplary faith, values and smile. The family would like to thank all the staff at Mercy Medical Center and St Luke's Hospital for the care they gave to George this past year.
