James Wain "Wayne" Britton was a lifelong resident of Troup County, Ga. He was the son of Pastor Emanuel Britton and Jane Smith.

James married Rebecca Whatley on Oct 24, 1861 (recorded as Nov 1, 1861) in Troup Co., Ga. They had 11 children.

James served in the CSA during the Civil War. James enlisted in Co. C, Ferrell's Battery, Ga Light Artillery, assigned to Roddy's Brigade. Two of his brothers served in this same Battery. James served from April 1862 to April 1865.
