Norris Everet Trowbridge, 85, Palmyra, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.
A native of Palmyra, born Jan. 9, 1918, he was a mathematics teacher and coach at New Albany High School, Morgan Township High School and North Harrison High School for 46 years. He was a member of the Palmyra United Methodist Church.
Known as a man who did practically everything, Trowbridge was president of the Palmyra Town Board for several years, and served on the board of directors of the Harrison County Bank. He was a member of Blue River Lodge in Fredericksburg, Indiana State Teachers Association and National Education Association. He also sold insurance and prepared tax returns. Occasionally, he declined to charge young couples for the latter.
"But the most important thing," Eddie Pitman said, "He was a wonderful person."
During his early years with North Harrison Community School Corp., Pitman was given a summer job by Trowbridge; so were Jon Howerton, Paul Scharf, and Trowbridge's son, Harvey. All the men worked in the corporation, and they were usually joined by a couple of other "community guys" as they set about all manner of carpentry as soon as school let out for summer. They continued until right before classes resumed.
"I remember when I was young, my uncle used to talk about a good school man," Pitman said. "Well, that's what (Trowbridge) was. He was a good school man. He always wanted to do what was right for North Harrison. He always wanted to help the young people."
In more than 40 years with the school corporation, "They not only got a day and a half out of him for every day he worked, they got a day and a half out of everyone who worked for him," Pitman said. "He loved teaching."
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, the former Helen E. Stoneburner; three sons, Don Trowbridge of Scottsburg, Harvey Trowbridge of Palmyra and Marvin Trowbridge of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a daughter, Cathy Clifton of Brandon, Miss.; a brother, Nolen Trowbridge of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Virginia Marshall of Martinsburg; nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Masonic rites were held Saturday at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra.
The funeral was Sunday at the funeral home with burial in the Palmyra Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial gifts to his church.
