Former Afton Man is Crash Victim
A tragic automobile accident in Westland, Mich. a suburb of Detroit, Sunday afternoon at 3:55 p.m., resulted in the death of a former Afton man, Walden G. Draney, 30.
Parents of Mr Draney, Elno and Laura Draney of Afton, said
Walden was enroute from his home in Westland to attend a choir practice i the Plymouth Ward Church, Dearborn Stake, when an oncoming car went out of control, crossed the center-stripe and side-swiped the Volkswagen being driven by Mr Draney, apparently killing him instantly. He was alone in the car.
Mr Draney, who was born and raised in Star Valley and graduated from the Star Valley High School, was married to the former Helen Fluckiger of Bedford, and they have two children.
Memorial services were held Tuesday night in the Plymouth Ward, and funeral services were scheduled Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Afton First Ward Chapel, with burial in the Afton Cemetery.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov 29 at 1 p.m. in the Afton First Ward Chapel, with Counselor Kay L. Robinson conducting, for Walden G. Draney, 30, who was killed instantly in an automobile collision Nov. 25, 1973 near his home at Westland, Mich. Prior memorial services were held Nov 27 in Plymouth Ward, Dearborn Stake in Michigan. Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
He was born Feb 6, 1943 at Afton, Wyo., to Elno Foss and Laura Grace Gardner Draney. He lived at Freedom, Wyo. until the family moved to Afton in 1954. He graduated from Star Valley High School in 1962, where he served as student body president and also president of the seminary council.
He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering form Utah state University in Logan, after which he accepted a position with the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, N.Y. in 1967. After two years there he resumed schooling and received an M.B. A. in industrial management at Wharton University, Philadelphia, Pa., and in 1971 accepted an position with the Ford Motor Co. at Livonia, Mich, as financial analyst working with product control.
His educational honors included the Dean's list, membership in Sigma Tau fraternity, a NASA scholarship to a space technology institute, a graduate assistantship and a Wharton graduate scholarship.
He married Helen Fluckiger of Bedford, Wyo Sept 9, 1963 in the Logan LDS Temple.
He was active in the LDS Church in which he conducted singing and ward choirs, sang in quartets, was a Sunday School teacher and music director,, Elders quorum teacher and president, young marrieds leader and assistant ward clerk in the various ward where he lived.
He had a good singing voice, playing the piano and was active in numerous musical productions. he was also active in all kinds of sports activities.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and two son, John Walden, 6 years, and Jason F. 14 1/2 months, Westland, Mich.; his parents, Elno Foss and Laura G. Draney; and three brothers, Nolan G., Northridge, Calif.; Terryl E., Bothell, Wash.; and Randall G., Tucson, Ariz.
