John Butler was born in Lost River Township, Martin County, Indiana. May 18, 1839 and departed this life April 13, 1924, aged 84 years, 10 months and 25 days.
His parents, Thomas and Susannah (Wyman) Butler came from Ohio in the pioneer days of Indiana.
He was married to Sarah A. Qualkenbush.
To this union eight children were born: Thomas H. of Washington, John W. of Lafayette, Margaret Smith of West Baden, Ida M. Simmons of Loogootee, Alfred G. and Joel G. of Shoals. Children Susie and Rachel having died in infancy. Mother died August 6, 1918.
He enlisted in Co A. 17th Ind. Mounted Infantry and served untill the close of the war, having been in the service eighteen months.
He was a member of the United Brethren church and died in that faith.
His death was due to pneumonia.
Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. A. Shirley, after which he was laid to rest in the Butler Cemetery.
