He was the son of Roland Allison Childs (1790-1854) and Amelia Childs (1793-1850).

He enlisted with Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry on 24 Jun 1863 from his home in Appanoose County, IA.

His wife filed for a pension (#108964) on 11 Sep 1865 and later for a minor's pension (#263591).

Pension records are on file at the Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma City, OK.
