He was the son of Lewis Martin Argo and Hautie May Willis. He married Eva Inez (Farley) Argo on Oct. 11, 1947 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He worked as a diesel mechanic for International Harvester for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sisters Ilene Argo Ringels and Carolene Argo Mason; son, Lavern Argo and great-grandson, Kolby Argo. Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 19, 2008 with the Rev. David Unsell officiating.

Leonard Lucas Argo, 96, a longtime Coal County resident, passed away March 14, 2008, in Atoka. He was born April 23, 1911, in Davis to Louis Martin Argo and Hautie May Willis. His father, Louis, was born in 1885 in the Choctaw Nation and was adopted by Dr. William G. Argo and Emma Johnson Boxley. His mother, Hautie May Willis, was born in 1890 at Wayne County, Tennessee, to John A. Willis and Ella Robinson Willis. The Willis family migrated to Murray County, Oklahoma, in 1905.


Leonard's parents were married June 10, 1910, at Davis and lived there until 1920 when they made the move to Coalgate with Leonard and his three sisters. The family moved to Tucson, Arizona, in the mid-1920s, but returned to Coalgate by the early 1930s. Leonard's mother and his sister, Mary Ella, had both died from tuberculosis in Arizona. His father died in 1944.


Leonard married Lillian Burgess and they had five children, Laverne, Shirley, Margaret, Barbara and Leonard Marcus Argo. In 1947, Leonard married Eva Inez Farley and they had two children, Glenda Jo and Gary Wayne.


Leonard worked for International Harvester in Fort Worth, Texas, until his retirement in 1972. He returned to Coalgate with his wife, Inez, and they lived out their lives there near their children. Besides raising their own children, Leonard and Inez also raised three of their grandchildren, Janice Reese, Cody Hickman and Carlos Argo.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Inez, in 2004; his parents, and three sisters, Mary Ella Argo, Caroline Argo Mason and Ilene Argo Ringels; one son, Laverne Lee Argo; one daughter, Shirley Jean Argo; one nephew, Delbert Lee Argo; and one great-grandson, Kolby Wayne Argo.


Survivors include three sons, Gary Argo and wife Brenda of Coalgate, Leonard Martin "Sonny" Argo Jr. and wife Shirley of Sunland, California, and Cody Dale Hickman of Laurens, Iowa; three daughters, Margaret May Ennis and husband Mark of Lake Forest, California, Glenda Jo Ladd of Coalgate and Janice Leora Reese and husband Darren of Laurens; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends. He is also survived by his sister's children, two nephews, Robert Wardrope of Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, and Henry Ringels of Coalgate, and one niece, Minnie Mason Richards of Lewisville, Texas.
