He was a veteran of World War I and after that served with the Red Cross in Poland. During World War II he was a captain in the Maine State Guard. He was a retired, teacher, coach and superintendent of schools.
Before moving to North Fort Myers, he lived in Unity, Maine. For 50 years or more, he was a member of Benjamin Berry Post of the American Legion and of the Star in the West Masonic Lodge in Unity. He was also a member of the county, state and national retired teachers associations.
He retired and moved to Fort Myers in the late 1960's. He was an avid golfer at Six Lakes Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Irma McKechnie, of Six Lakes; two sons, Karl McKechnie Jr. of Hunstville, Ala., and Dale McKechnie of Fort Lee, N.J., one sister, Dorothy Schandler of Gorham, N.H.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
