EVA L. Adams
Eva Lena Smith Adams, 101, a resident of Bemis for 81 years and more recently a resident of Moundsville, departed this life Monday morning, Nov. 24, 2008, in East Ohio Regional Hospital at Martins Ferry, Ohio, with a prayer and in the arms of her great-granddaughter Michelle. She passed peacefully to her Lord and Savior.
She was born Sunday, July 7, 1907, at Riverton, Pendleton County, a daughter of the late Mae Harper Thompson and stepfather, Sherd.
Surviving are daughter-in-law, Helen L. Adams of Moundsville; grandson, Rick Adams and wife, Sue, of Parkersburg; and their daughters and families, Letitia Walker and husband, Joey, and children, Tori, Adam, Braden, Kendra, Maxwell and Isabella, all of Vincent, Ohio; Kristen Johnson and husband, Tony, and children, Carly and Miles, all of Ashland, Ky.; and Jacqie Sperling and husband, Ben, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; granddaughter, Sue White of Moundsville and her sons, Levi of Arlington, Va., Grant of Morgantown and Tom White of Moundsville; Great-grandson, Thomas R. Adams of Phoenix, Ariz.,; granddaughter, Debbie Adams of Bemis and her daughter, Michelle Carpenter and husband, Tony, and their daughter, Rain, all of Shipyards, Ohio; and four stepgreat-grandsons, Chris, Greg, Doug and Jon Wood.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 62 years, Kennie E. Adams; their only son, Jack; and grandson, John L.; three brothers, Truman, Richard and Billy Thompson; four sisters, Susie Hedrick, Myrtle Jones, Hilda Phares and Geneva Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. The family circle is now completed.
Eva worked as a food server in Baltimore, Md., and retired from Randolph County Schools as a cook at the Bemis School. She prepared many delicious school lunches on a wood cook stove. She made homemade bread every day and other favorites such as creamed chicken and biscuits, apple betty and hot dog sauce.
Eva and Kennie always graciously welcomed many people into their home from both near and far. Many people still maintain ties with Bemis, owning homes and camps or just visiting as a result of Eva, Kennie and Jack's friendship and hospitality.
In past years, Eva would open the Bemis Church on Sundays, often she being the only one there to worship. Always a lady, she enjoyed shopping, eating out, knitting, sewing and visiting with friends and family.
In recent years, Eva made her home in Moundsville with her caretakers, Sue, Helen, Michelle and special little helper, Rain. Also helping with Granny, as he lovingly called her, was Ricky. She will be missed by her extended family and many friends.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Saturday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Nolan Turner will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the IOOF Cemetery, at Elkins. Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Eva Lena Smith Adams. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com.
