Lifeless Body of Woman Is Found

Miss Margaret A. Aurandt, Who Lived Alone at Beaver Dams, Dies at Solitary Spot on Mountain

The lifeless body of Miss Margaret A. Aurandt, who lived alone at Beaver Dams, several miles east of Canoe Creek, was found on Saturday morning on the mountain about a mile from her home.

She had been missing from her home for ten days and her body was found by a body of neighbors who had been conduction a search for her.

Miss Aurandt, who was aged 63, had evidently started to walk across the mountain to Yellow Spring and while on her way was seized with a heart attack. It is known that she suffered from heart trouble and the exertion of the walk no doubt brought on the fatal attack.

She carried a basket containing several glass jars and these she had dropped about ten feet from the place where the body lay, she doubtless staggered on after the first attack. Her body lay across a sapling that she may have grasped and bent to the ground as she was seized with the fatal attack.

Miss Aurandt was last seen by other residents of the neighborhood on Oct. 2. But it was not until last Wednesday that callers at her home found that she was missing. Chickens penned up on the place had apparently died of starvation.

Search was then instituted, but it was not until Saturday morning that an organized posse began a systematic scouring of the mountains and shortly before noon her body was found along the path leading to Yellow Spring. Deputy Coroner Guy S. Kling, was notified and he went to the scene, made an investigation and coming to the conclusion that death resulted from natural causes, decided that an inquest was unnecessary.

Miss Aurandt was a daughter of Jacob and Catherine Aurandt and was born at Beaver Dams, Catharine township, July 30, 1866. She spent her entire life there. Her father was a local preacher of the United Brethren church, a man of fine character and highly esteemed by the people throughout the eastern section of the county.

In her young womanhood Miss Aurandt attended school at Huntingdon, and also at Roaring Spring, at the latter place attending a summer normal that was conducted by Professor W.R. Vaughn, at that time principal of the Roaring Spring schools. She had planned to teach but never served in that capacity. She was a woman of exemplary character and was a member of the United Brethren church at Canoe Creek.

She is survived by two brothers and two sisters, as follows; H.H. Aurandt, Blanche, wife of Samuel Kephart, and Sara, wife of Floyd Sager, of Altoona, and Arvad Aurandt of Valparaiso, Ind.

The body was brought to Altoona and the funeral services were held at 10 o'clock this morning at the funeral parlors of Roher and Mauk at Juniata, conducted by Rev. A. L. Thompson, pastor of the East Freedom and Canoe Creek charge of the United Brethren Church.

Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.
