In 1887, Henry and his brother Charles left Kansas and traveled to Cowles, New Mexico, high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. They each filed homestead applications for 160 acres of land. Because of harsh conditions, neither man completed his requirements. Henry returned to Muscotah.
