Lyda Curtis Huseman
LONETREE - Lyda Curtis Huseman, 91, of Lonetree, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Mesa, Ariz., in the home of her caregiver, Evaune Windsor.

She was born Sept. 13, 1911, in Safford, Ariz., to Ammon and Mary Jane (Slade) Curtis. She attended elementary school in Safford and San Jose, Ariz., and junior and senior high in Thatcher, Ariz.

Upon graduating from Gila Junior College in Thatcher, (where she studied to be a teacher and participated in music) in 1930, she traveled to Lyman to visit her uncle Joe Slade's family. She contracted to teach school at Lonetree.

She attended summer school at the University of Wyoming in preparation for teaching. She met Albert W. "Bud" Huseman, a cowboy/rancher, at the Christmas Dance at Lonetree in 1930. They were married Dec. 12, 1931, in Coalville, Utah. A married woman, in those days, was not allowed to teach school. Therefore the marriage was kept secret until February 1932 when the district went broke. Their secret was told and even though she was married, she was rehired in April to finish the school year. She later taught school in Burntfork, Lonetree, Mesa, Ariz., and Ogden, Utah.

For 10 years they worked Bud's father's ranch at Lonetree. In 1942, they purchased their own ranch there and continued in the ranching business to the end of their lives. After teaching her own children a couple of years, Mrs. Huseman accompanied their girls, for the next 10 years, to Mesa and Ogden for schooling, while her husband ran their ranch alone. In October 2002, she had gone to Arizona to spend the winter months.

Mrs. Huseman was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Republican party.

Her interests included cooking and being a seamstress.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lois and Norman "Skip" Roberts of Laramie and Nancy and John Dornan of Oregon City, Ore.; three grandsons and their wives, Ken and Sharon Roberts, Keith and Jan Roberts, and Kurt and Diane Roberts; one great-grandchild, Isabel Roberts; one sister, Thelma Carpenter of Thatcher, Ariz.; three brothers, Denzel, Fred and Melvin Curtis of Mesa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 70 years, who died June 30, 2002, she was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Marion, Ralph, Lawrence and Armon Curtis.

Funeral services were Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Lehi LDS 8th Ward, 1430 N. Grand Ave., in Mesa, with Bishop Rick Abbott officiating. Interment was at the Mesa Cemetery in Mesa.

Pallbearers were John Dornan, Skip Roberts, Ken Roberts, Keith Roberts, Kurt Roberts, and Larry Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Gregory, Jack Hickey, Glen Wadsworth, Denzel Curtis, Fred Curtis, Melvin Curtis, Mark Curtis, Kelly Curtis, Jon Curtis, Noel Allen, Ron Everett, Gordon Flitton and Farrell Jensen.

Memorial services will also be at Mountain View LDS Church in Mountain View on Friday, April 11, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Bishop Dave Tanner officiating.
