He started his newspaper career in 1910 as a reporter with the Free Press, predecessor of the Times-Press. He was publisher when it consolidated with the Independent Times to become the Times-Press, later becoming president. He organized and was president of St. Mary's Hospital Board. During World War II, he headed Red Cross Finance campaigns. He was elected, statewide, to serve on the U. of Illinois Board of Trustees, 1941-1953. He was trustee and president of Riverview Cemetery Association, director of Union National Bank, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, Citizen's Loan and Finance Company, and Stevens News Agency. He served as Streator postmaster from 1921 to 1927. He was active on the YMCA board, Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, Streator Contry Club, and Salvation Army Board. Fornof Manor was named in his honor in 1977. He is the son of John W. Fornof.
