Son of Ann Raup and James Shornock.

Shornock was a construction company carpenter living in New Bern, NC, prior to his death.

The manhunt and death of Michael John Shornock made the headlines of the Times-News, Hendersonville, NC, both during the event and in a follow-up story a year later. (Refer to follow-up story published on the front page on Thursday, November 26, 1987.)

To recap:
Michael John Shornock was a 21 year old fugitive and the center of a manhunt envolving more than 400 lawmen on Gilliam Mountain, Wednesday, November 26, 1986.

Shornock and Edwin Pete Black, 22 of Hendersonville, had robbed a bank of the First Citizens Bank and Trust Co. in Cape Carteret, Carteret County, North Carolina, on Friday. They had wounded Sgt Joe Willis of the Cape Carteret Police Department as they escaped.

The first shots fired against Henderson County law officers occured Saturday when Deputy Jimmy Case attempted to stop Shornock and Black for littering. Case's car was disabled and officers set up roadblocks.

A gunfight a few hours later at a Saturday night party at the home of William Anthony Miller, 25, of Gilliam Mountain Road resulted in the deaths of Miller and Dennis Pack, 36. Shornock had apparently fired some of the 150 rounds in the gunbattle and escaped into the forest after the shootout.

Black was captured on Sunday at a roadblock while attempting to take Miller to the hospital.

Four officers were injured during the search for Shornock. He was found hiding in an old barn on a remote Sugarloaf Mountain farm. Shornock wounded two SBI agents before an officer from the Asheville Police Department shot and killed him.
