Henry Garett Hopken, the oldest child of Christ Hopken and his wife, Anna, nee Oellgen, was born on a farm near Ohiowa, Fillmore County, Nebraska, on December 9, 1889. He passed away at the Lutheran Memorial Hospital at Hebron, Nebraska on August 30, 1957, at the age of 67 years, eight months and 21 days.
When he was fourteen years old, his family moved to a farm three miles north of Bruning, where he lived until the year 1916. Thereupon, he and his brother, Christ, moved to a farm south of Strang. In 1919, he moved back to the Christ Hopken home place, which he purchased in 1949. He and his wife retired from farming in 1952 and moved to Bruning.
On February 15, 1918, he was married to Alice "Libbie" Barta. The two had been planning for their fortieth wedding anniversary next February. To the union two sons were born, LaVerle, who lives in Bruning and Alvin, who is living on the home place. Both sons have served in the armed forces.

Henry Hopken was interested in all affairs, large or small. He always held to the principle that action speaks louder than words.

He is survived by his wife and the two granddaughters, Randra and Sandra, who have been raised in his home; his two sons and thier wives; four other granddaughters and two grandsons.

He was baptized in infancy on March 11, 1890, by the Rev. O. S. Susdice in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, then east of Ohiowa. He was confirmed by Rev. Otto Klatt on March 27, 1907, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Ohiowa. Through his fellowship there he has held fast to his Christian faith and loyalty every since. He served as president of the church council for six years.

He is survived also by four brothers and five sisters; Lizzie Schroeder of Geneva, Christ Hopken of Strang, John Hopken of Bruning, Ben Hopken of Geneva, Anna Heinrichs of Hebron, Bill Hopken of Burlingame, Kansas, Martha DuBois of Strang and Elsie Reinsch of Strang; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

His father and mother and two sisters, Bertha and Frieda preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church south of Ohiowa. Interment was in the Bruning Public Cemetery.
