During the Civil War he became Colonel of the 69thNC Militia on 17-Aug-61, serving until 27-Feb-62 when he was appointed Captain of Company G, 45thNC Infantry. He resigned this position 29-Jan-63 due to health issues. He may have later served as colonel of a Senior Reserve Unit.
He returned to his law practice after the war, moving to Greensboro in 1868. He served on the NC Supreme 1879-1881, returning to private practice after wards. He died in Greensboro, 6-May-96
