John H. Dillard attended UNC , but was unable to complete the course work for health reasons. He later went to William & Mary, and graduated with a law degree in 1840. He practiced law for several years in Richmond, before returning to Rockingham County in 1846 to enter into a law practice with Judge Ruffin. He also married Ann I. Martin in Jan 1846.

During the Civil War he became Colonel of the 69thNC Militia on 17-Aug-61, serving until 27-Feb-62 when he was appointed Captain of Company G, 45thNC Infantry. He resigned this position 29-Jan-63 due to health issues. He may have later served as colonel of a Senior Reserve Unit.

He returned to his law practice after the war, moving to Greensboro in 1868. He served on the NC Supreme 1879-1881, returning to private practice after wards. He died in Greensboro, 6-May-96
