Harvey E. Buckner, 81, beloved father and grandfather, passed peacefully away Thursday morning, Nov. 20, 2008.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Harvey E. Buckner, better known as Gene, was born March 18, 1927, in Grapevine. Gene's uncle, Jerome Buckner, and his cousin, Kirby Buckner, were some of the founding people of the once-small town of Grapevine, where Gene had many relatives and friends. He married Joann Naylor on Sept. 27, 1952, and they had a family consisting of three sons and one daughter.
Gene moved the family to the west side of Fort Worth after he was hired as a stock clerk at Convair. Convair, of course, later became General Dynamics and now is Lockheed Martin. Gene also worked for almost 30 years as a custodian for the Fort Worth ISD, first at Carter Riverside High School and then at Leonard Middle School. He was very popular with the teachers and kids at Leonard, and one day back in mid-1980s, after the prompting of some of the faculty at Leonard, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram featured him in the newspaper in its ongoing weekly "Local Favorites" article.
Gene Buckner displayed a tremendous work ethic during his life. He was a very hard-working, honest man who almost never missed work. When he retired, he had over 180 sick days saved up that he never used. He retired from the FWISD in 1991. He was the foundation of our family for many years, and he will be greatly missed.
Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Joann, in 2004.
Survivors: Daughter, Regina Buckner; sons, Harvey W. Buckner, Stan Buckner and Dennis Buckner and wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Candace Robinson and husband, Jonathan, and Jeremy Buckner; and great-grandson, Wyatt James Robinson.
