Gilbert and his father came to Bluefield, West Virginia from Pembroke, Virginia, around 1890 during the building boom which came about due to the construction of the railroad and the roundhouse, maintenance shops and switching yards. They set up their saw mill on the Rev. James Calfee property. They then built and sold houses. That is how Gilbert Williams became acquainted with James Calfee's daughter Belle Calfee. Gilbert built their house on Walton Avenue in south Bluefield, WV.
