John was the son of John Pottebaum and Mathilda Fluecht. He married Coletta Timmerman on Feb. 14, 1928, at St. Francis Church in Maple River, IA. They were the parents of Vernon, Paul, Earl, Donald, Raymond, Arthur, Rita, Robert, and Marylou.

July 14 1997 - Carroll Daily Times - Mass of the Christian burial for John Pottebaum of Carroll will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll. Mr. Pottebaum, 99, of 115 S. Maple St., died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at his home. The Revs. Steven McLoud and Peter Duc Nguyen will officiate the Mass. Lector will be Dr. James Pottebaum. Eucharistic ministers will be Lou Pottebaum and Elaine Pottebaum. Gift bearers will be Chad Heuton, Kelly Pottebaum, Jennifer Thacker, Kayla Pottebaum, Brandi Wittrock and Daniel 0lmstead.

Casket bearers will be Marty Pottebaum, Anthony Pottebaum, Mike Pottebaum, Rick Pottebaum, John Pottebaum, Steve Pottebaum, Matt Pottebaum and Ron Rotert. Honorary casket bearers will be Cliff Hugeback, Shirley Hugeback, Joe Kroeger, Mary Pat Schrad and Myrtle Goecke. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends will call after 2:30 and a rosary will be recited at 3 Tuesday afternoon at Twit Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 and a rosary at 8:15 Tuesday night at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 16, 1897, at Starkenberg, Mo., a son of John Bernard and Mathilda (Flucht) Pottebaum. He and Coletta Mary Timmerman were married Feb. 14, 1928, at St. Francis Church in Maple River with the Rev. August Meyer officiating. Mr. Pottebaum farmed in the Carroll area. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Holy Name Society.

Survivors include eight children: Vernon Pottebaum and his special friend, Shirley Gute, of Carroll, Earl Pottebaum and his wife, Caroline, of Des Moines, Donald Pottebaum
and his wife, Elaine, of Lidderdale, Arthur Pottebaum and his wife, Lou, of Westside, Raymond Pottebaum and his wife, Agnes, of Anita, Rita Pottebaum of Carroll, Robert
Pottebaum and his wife, Rosie, of Halbur and Mary Lou Rotert of Omaha, Neb.; 31 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Pottebaum, of Carroll.

Mr. Pottebaum was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Coletta, in 1981; a son Paul Pottebaum, in infancy; a daughter-in-law, Eleanora Pottebaum; a son-in-law,
Jerome Rotert; two grandchildren: JoAnn Pottebaum and Thomas Pottebaum; and six siblings: Ben Pottebaum, Clara Nothstine, Bill Pottebaum, Anna Maddux, Anton Pottebaum, and Mary Shehan.
