L. E. DOWDELL DIES AFTER 3 WEEK'S ILLNESS
Succumbs to Pneumonia and Other Complications Today at 12:15 A.M. at His LaPorte Ave. Home.
ON NEWSPAPERS FOR THIRTY-FIVE YEARS

Ending a fight which had been considered hopeless almost since he was stricken some three weeks ago, death came at 12:15 o'clock this morning to Lewis Edgar Dowdell, one of the best known members of the printing fraternity in Valparaiso, at his home, 823 LaPorte avenue.
For several days his condition was serious, with practically no chance for recovery. Pneumonia and other complications which had set in had so undermined his once rugged constitution that he was unable to stave off the ravages of the disease.
News of his death was received with profound sorrow among a large circle of friends in all parts of the city, and many sections of the county where he was known.
Mr. Dowdell was born on November 15, 1875, at Lawrenceburg, Ind., and came to Valparaiso with his parents, Attorney and Mrs. William H. Dowdell, when eight years of age. He resided continuously here ever since, with exception of short residences in Hammond and Gary.
Mr. Dowdell received his first baptism into the newspaper business when he took a position in the early nineties with Captain Edward Welty, on the old Vidette. After learning the trade he was employed on newspapers in Michigan City, Gary, Hammond and elsewhere. He also was employed for many years at the Wade and Wise Printing plant on College Hill.
In later years he was engaged in the advertising novelty business, and at various times wrote feature stories for the Vidette-Messenger.
On February 11, 1900, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Coulter, of this city. To this union were born two sons, Lowell, of Valparaiso, and Merle, of Chicago, who with the widow survive.
Mr. Dowdell also leaves his parents, one brother, Earl C. Dowdell, and one sister, Mrs. A. A. Williams, both of this city.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of this city, joining when he was fourteen years of age.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but will be announced tomorrow.
