Charles Wesley Richards was the son of Samuel James Richards and Sarah Jane Winn. He grew to manhood around Basco, Illinois mostly with his father as his mother died of Consumption when he was nine years old. He married Nina Pearson in 1879 in Indiana and they had two daughters: Mabel Agatha Richards and Maud K. Richards. He eventually made his way to Mississippi where he met and married Katharine Shore. In about 1895 he had a photograph taken with his older brother Augustus in Natchez, Mississippi and they sent a copy to their sister Carmoline Staples (which was passed down to Audrey Staples). He died in the 1898 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Natchez.

Richards--Died, Thursday evening, December 1, at his home in Natchez, Miss. of yellow fever, Charles W. Richards, aged 45 years.
Mr. Richards leaves to mourn his death two daughters, Mabel, who has been at his bedside throughout his illness, and Maud, who had been visiting James P. Radcliff and family of North Seventh Street for several months.
Mr. Richards had been engineer at the water works and had been a resident of that place for the past three years, having moved his family there from this city. About a year ago his wife died and she is buried there and he will be buried at her side.
Miss Maud Richards will not attend the funeral of her father owing to the danger of her contracting the dreadful disease.
