The following was reported in the Ogden Examiner dated December 2, 1937, Ogden, Utah

Explosion Burns CCC Shopman

Civilian Conservation Service enrollee at Bridgeland, 10 miles east of here (Duchesne, Utah) was severely burned about the legs and lower body while lighting a fire at the camp yesterday. A helper in the camp mechanic shop, the youth was lighting a fire when an explosion occurred. His overalls were burned from his body when he was found a few minutes later by a watchman. He was taken to a government hospital at Fort Douglas.

Other information: Gerald was transferred to a burn unit at the Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco where he remained until he died, 14 days later. His body was then shipped to Martha Gilbert Shanks at Duchesne, Utah. His date of death was listed as 28 January 1928. He was buried in the Utahn Cemetery, north of Duchesne, Utah.

Martha Gilbert Shanks was his adoptive mother who raised him from age 4 until his death. They (Martha & Joe Shanks, and Gerald) resided at Roosevelt, Utah and Utahn, Duchesne County, Utah.
