He enlisted on 28th of February, 1862 for a three year term at Benton Barracks in the state of Missouri.

He is in Company E, 1st Regiment, Cavalry from the state of Iowa. Jonathan is 20 year old, 5 foot 8 inches, light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. His occupation is a farmer, born in the state of Iowa. He is permitted furlough to go to Sugar Creek Township in the County of Cedar, State of Iowa. Then he is to report to Little Rock, Arkansas to rejoin his Company or be consided a deserter.

Jonathon supplies his own horse and saddle, he is paid extra for this. He is wounded at Bayou Metre, Arkansas, on Aug 27, 1863. He is discharge in 1865, Austin, Texas. He decided not to go back to Iowa, the residence where he lived when he enlisted. So he forego any money due to him for travel.
