Ellis was the son of Thomas Edward Taylor and Maud Ruth [Lewis] Taylor. One of seven children. Ellis grew up in Lovington, Lea Co., New Mexico, where he met his future wife, Cleo Houser. They married in a double wedding with his brother, Gaston. The ceremony was performed by Jacob Clay Lewis, grandfather of the grooms in Brownfield, Texas where Jacob was living at the time. Ellis and Cleo had ten children and raised them during the depression era picking cotton and farming for a living. Later he became a professional fence builder and built fences all over Eastern New Mexico. Ellis had a quick wit and his eyes were always smiling. He always said, "I was just trying to put one foot in front of the other to keep a roof over my families heads and food for them to eat." He wasn't trying to be rich or famous or anything he wasn't. He was an honest, hardworking family man who loved and cared for his large family.
