Carl Laas was born in Germany and came to America with this mother and father and siblings and settled in Texas. His mother's burial is unknown. Carl became a prosperous farmer and merchant in Austin County, where he continued to reside until the year 1894, when he married his second wife and thereafter made his home at Greenvine in Washington County. At the time of the Civil War he became a loyal soldier of the Confederacy. His first wife, Christiana, passed the closing years of her life at Shelby in Austin County. She was the mother of 11 children. On April 3, 1894, Carl Laas married for his second wife Mrs. Marie Seidel Bartels, a daughter of Ernest and Wilhelmine Seidel. Carl Laas and Marie had two daughters, Mary and Dora Laas.
After a long and happy life with two wives and family Carl Laas, who lived successively in Austin County and Washington County, died in Greenvine in the latter county November 16, 1899. He was buried beside his first wife in Shelby on November 20, 1899.
