John was the son of William Aldrich and Charity Smith. He married Maggie Dixon on 01 Mar 1884 in Dedham,​ Carroll,​ Iowa. In the 1900 census they had 7 children, 4 living: Mary, Roscoe, Mabel, Walter, Margaret Naomi, and Klaheena.

Carroll Daily Herald - Monday , June 2nd, 1941 - John H. Aldrich, 84, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday in the St. Anthony Hospital at Carroll, his death being attributed to complications attendant to his advanced age. He had been ill since May 24, and had been cared for at the hospital for five days.

Funeral services are to be at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. at the Methodist Church in Dedham, with the pastor, the Rev. J.R. McNichols, officiating. Burial will be in the Dedham Cemetery and pallbearers will be William Loeltz, John Lewis, Hans Lauridsen, Theodore Pomeroy, Dave Thomas and John Meshek. Rites will be under the direction of the Coder Funeral Home of Coon Rapids.

Mr. Aldrich was a native Iowan. He was born in Marion County May 9, 1857, a son of William H. and Charity Aldrich. Thirty years of his life wore spent on the farm, and the remainder in town. He had been retired for some time. He had lived In Carroll County
since Mar. 1, here from Audubon County.

During all of that time he had resided at Dedham, Mar. 1, 1884, he was married at Dedham to Margaret Dixon, who survives.

He also leaves two sons and four daughters: Roscoe Aldrich, a railway clerk at Roanoke, Va.; Walter, who is in the army medical center at Washington, D.C; Mrs. Daniel Lewis
(Mary) Detroit Lakes, Minn.: Mrs. Gordon Corwin (Naomi), Belmond, Iowa; Mrs. William Albert (Mabel), LeMars, and Klaheena Aldrich, a primary teacher at Phoenix, Ariz.

Other survivors include twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, Ed Aldrich of Earlham, Iowa, and two sisters: Mrs. Anne Jordan, Audubon, and Mrs. G.C. Renftle, Banning, Calif.

He was preceded in death by three children who died in infancy; one brother, Charles Aldrich; and two sisters, Mrs. O.G. Ritchey and Mrs. Walter Woodrow. Mr. Aldrich was a member of the Methodist Church. He belonged to the Carroll Daily Herald and Times Three-Quarter Century Club.
